Blackberry Bold and Orb for Live TV (and other multimedia) – yes it’s possible

December 8th, 2008 Curtis 3 comments
One of my favorite programs in the world is Orb. That’s right… the world. It falls just behind, Dreamweaver and Photoshop. It streams all my media from my home computer to just about any device I want it to. My laptop, my playstation 3, and many of the cell phones that I’ve had in the past. When I purchased my blackberry bold a couple weeks ago, one of the first things I had to try out was it’s support for streaming media, specifically with Orb.

In the past, I had tried this setup with the Blackberry Curve, which of course, did not support streaming media (at least not readily). Let’s just put it this way, I never got it to work with the Curve.  I read a few forums prior to purchasing the Bold where people where having trouble getting it to work with Orb, so I figured that I would share my success here.

Configuring Orb

The setup to make this work is pretty simple.  Download and install Orb as usual.  Make sure the proper ports are forwarded to your Orb server or pc if you are using a router.  The default ports are: 80 (TCP) for the web interface and 554 (UDP) for the streaming.  Port 80 may be blocked by your ISP for security reasons, so you may need to try alternatives.  Mine runs nicely on port 83.  If you have a cable card in your computer (which you will need to stream Live Tv, you’ll want to configure this now.  The only change to the initial configuration or Orb that you will have to make will be from the phone.  Point your Bold’s internet browser to:

http://mycast.orb.com

Login using the username and password that you picked when you created your Orb account.

At the bottom of the page click on the Settings link.

Then click on Stream.

You will then see several options as far as what format Orb will stream to your device in.  Make sure that the third one is selected ( 3GP Format (.sdp) )  Note:  In some cases, this may already be selected.  Finally, click Save and Exit. That’s it.  You’re done.  If you already have music in your library, click on Audio at the top and find a song or artist and give it a test.  Before you play anything the first time, Orb will perform a speed test to determine what quality stream to use.  If the audio works successfully, try a video or your television stream (again, only if you have a cable card in your computer).

How well does it work

Depends.  If you are on a wi-fi connection.  You shouldn’t have any trouble with your stream, and you should get good quality out of the audio and video.  The same should be true of a 3G connection.  However, if you are on EDGE, you may want to stick to just audio as video is almost unwatchable.  Also, I’ve noted that while listening to music in my car, the audio tends to get out of sync as the phone passes from tower to tower.  (This is on the EDGE network.  I have yet to test it in 3G.)  However, if you are stationary, even on EDGE, you shouldn’t notice this loss in synchronization.

Troubleshooting

If you have trouble setting up your Blackberry Bold to stream multimedia from Orb, I recommend Orb’s forums.  It’s pretty safe to say that someone else has already had the same problem you have.  And of course, I welcome any questions or comments here.  I’ll offer all the help that I can.

One Last Thing

For the love of all things good and holy, make sure you have an unlimited data plan before you start messing with Orb on your phone.  Otherwise, you will quickly find yourself with a very large bill from the At&t.  Cheers.

Blackberry Bold vs Curve vs iPhone 3G vs Nokia e65 vs Treo 750 (not your typical review)

The Review

I’d like to say that this is the only blackberry bold review that you will ever need, but if you’re anything like me, you’ll read at least five more before you go out and buy.  If you are said consumer… kudos to you.  This review will include some of the basic things that you’ll find in every other review, but it will also include some of the things that I wished I had known prior to buying it.  And without further a due, I present to you the Blackberry Bold.

Background

Just so you, the reader, know what my review is based on, over the course of the past twelve months, I’ve carried five, count them, five phones:  a Blackberry Curve, a Nokia E65, a Treo 750, an iPhone 3G, and finally the aforementioned Blackberry 9000, better known as the Bold. That’s a lot of phones and a lot of pretty incredible features to stand up to.  A lot of my review, consequently, will be comparisons to those phones.

What I look for

There are several things that I look for when buying a phone.  Some of which come without question.  Battery life and reception are important.  Lucky for me, the Bold, of course, runs on the At&t network.  Another thing that I want in a phone is responsiveness.  It seems like a simple enough request to ask for a phone that does what I ask it to do without lagging 3-5 seconds to do it.  This was the primary reason I decided to abandon the iPhone.  While it was powerful, I found myself not responding to text messages just because it took about 5 seconds for the keyboard to show up when writing a message.  In terms of cell phone time, that’s forever, and it might as well not even show up at all.  The E65 and the Treo… same slow lagginess.  It’s like they try to pack too many features into a phone without letting the hardware catch up.  Okay enough complaining.  Moving on….

Why the Bold?

Of all the phones I’ve carried, why did I choose the Bold?  I’m glad you asked.  Out of all those phones, the first was my Blackberry Curve, and it gave me one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had with a cell phone.  There were, however, a couple things that I wanted to see.  3G and Wi-fi were not a part of the mix.  Imagine my excitement when I heard of a Blackberry phone that would add both!    It’s still lacking a couple other things, but I’ll get to that.

Awesome Epic Design (screen, case, keyboard)

The Blackberry Bold is one of the best looking phones I’ve ever seen.  If you’ve read any other reviews other than this one, you would already know that the screen is absolutely stunning.  Sporting the same resolution as the iPhone but in a smaller window makes reading text, watching videos, and surfing the web look fantastic.  The new icon design on the home screen does help.  In fact, the icons alone make it worth the purchase.  Put those icons on let’s say a Curve and it would be just as sexy.  Yes, I went there.

The casing on the Bold is equally sexy.  Plastic and pleather, yes, but it truly is a solid design.  It feels good in your hand (that’s what she said).  It’s slightly too wide to fit comfortably in your palm.  But that is neither here nor there.

I have to admit that the one thing that I was probably the most skeptical about before I bought it, but yet the most happy with now that I have bought it, is the keyboard.  I held mini typing competitions between the Curve and the Bold while I was in the At&t store.  I must say that at that time, the Curve won.  But, (there’s a but) remember I carried the Curve for 6 months and I was very used to its design.  Now (there’s a now) I can honestly say that the keyboard on the Bold is hands down the best keyboard I have ever used on a phone.  It’s firm enough to have good feedback to it, yet it’s soft enough to keep it quiet (unlike the curve’s loud clicking) .  The keys are nicely spaced and if you have ever used a Blackberry with a qwerty keyboard before, then this will be very easy to get the hang of as symbol locations have not moved.

So there are a fair number of useless applications available for the iPhone. The best by far: the Wooo Button. For all those moments in everyday life that require celebration.

the sky

August 21st, 2008 Curtis 1 comment

On our way to get some Eders ice cream last night (which costs $4.03 for two smalls.  Buying them separately costs $2.01.  where the extra penny comes from, I have no idea, and I am probably overly bitter about it… (Also, Brad accidently ordered a medium.  Ha!  And he calls me an idiot.)  Anyway, the sky was beautiful last night. We snapped a couple pictures quick. Hope you can see it…
