New Blog

May 5, 2009 by Curtis Leave a Comment

I started a new blog: xtgo.net.  It’s merely a branch of my current blog.  I realize that most people don’t care to read about the techy stuff that I write about from time to time.  Additionaly, there are people who don’t care to read about… well… everything else.  So… in an attempt to be a bit more focused, blog.xtego.com will continue to be about personal stuff and will continue to be published to facebook.  Xtgo.net, on the other hand, will encompass all things techy.  So… if you’ve enjoyed my nerdiness in the past I invite you to check out my new blog.

Everything is better in 3D

April 20, 2009 by Curtis Leave a Comment

Panasonic is suposedly going to roll out production of a new 3D camera.  It sports two lenses fused together to form native 3D capturing using a single device.  For those of you who know how 3D video works, you would know that there are a couple of ways to do it.  While I’ve never messed around with it myself, I do understand some of the basic concepts.  Whether one wants to create 3D illusions from polarity or using color accents, both cases require two angles.  Previously, of course, this was done with 2 cameras.  Fancy the fact that it will now be possible with one.  You’ve heard it said, everything is better with bluetooth, (CBS’s “The Big Bang Theory,” Sheldon speaking) well I say… “Everything is better in three dimensions.”

Save the trees and kill the children

February 1, 2009 by Curtis 2 Comments

One of my favorite musical groups is casting crowns.  Back in 2005 the released their Lifesong album.  Lifesong, of couse being one of the biggest songs in the CCM genre that year.  One of the songs on that album that I liked from the beginning but never really put much thought into is the song “While you were sleeping.”  It’s a song about how history repeats itself: how nation after nation misses what’s important.  The first city, Bethlehem, welcomed the Savior of the world to the world, but yet still couldn’t make room for him.

Oh Bethlehem, you will go down in history as a city with no room for its king.

The second city, Jerusalem didn’t have room to hear what Jesus had

Jerusalem, you will  go down in history as a city with no room for its king.

The song finally hits home when it turns its focus to the United States of America and how we’re so caught up in being politically correct that we are no better than the nations and cities who rejected Jesus and his teachings.  One of my favorite lines in the whole song is:

…As we’re sound asleep by philosophies of save the trees and kill the children.

I didn’t understand the significance of that line the first few times I heard it.  But I was in church today listening to the pastor’s message and it made me think of.  How messed up is our society in that it will stand up for endangered animals or the preservation of wildlife and trees, but yet, that same society will stand up for the right to kill unborn babies?  And what’s worse?  People don’t see a problem with this thinking.  It’s no wonder the song ends asking the questions:

America what will we miss while we are sleeping?  Will Jesus come again and leave us slumbering where we lay?  America will we go down in history as a nation with no room for its king?

The New Palm pre (a blind review)

January 8, 2009 by Curtis 1 Comment

Palm pre

By this point, the fine folks over at engadget have pretty much blogged up the new Palm pre.  I can’t help but get the feeling that this is rather Applish.  We (and by we I mean engadget) waits anxiously for the press release while building up hype on their homepage.  From inside, they blog live what’s going down with the occasional cell phone snapshot.  The only thing that is missing is the black 3/4 lenth sleeved sweater and jeans… some of you know who I’m talking about.  But I hear he didn’t show up this year either.  I guess I’ve just been trained to how Apple does this sort of thing.

The apple store goes down just before the press release then comes back up right after revealing the new products we’ve just heard about.  I expected the same thing palm.  However, I hit up palmone.com well after the press release had concluded and I was met with the Palm Treo Pro.  That’s old news.  There was nothing to satisfy my apetite for the new pre.  Oh well, not everyone can be like Apple.  But that’s not the only Apple vibe I got…

The Palm pre, like an iPhone?

Now keep in mind, I haven’t held one of these suckers yet (hence the blind review), But I’m trying to decide what palm is trying to do here.  They seem pretty confident with this new design which resembles an iPhone when closed, a slide phone action, a large screened Centro when open, and still somehow a clamshell when opened.  Get all that?  Will it take off?  Time will tell, I suppose.  As far as the iPhone resemblance goes… there’s a touch screen with big icons, the status bar at the top looks striking similar to that of the iPhone, and lets not forget the dock at the bottom of the screen.  The only thing that really sets it apart is the keyboard. It looks a lot like a centro keyboard, maybe a little bit bigger. But it doesn’t really matter. Any keyboard is going to be faster than trying to type on the iPhone’s touch screen.   But wait… there’s more.

THIS JUST IN

The palm website is now up with pictures!!

Sexy

Okay, it does look nice.  It’s curvy… not too big.  I’m warming up to it.  I’m thinking it’s going to be a hit.

WebOS

It looks like Palm is learning a bit from Apple’s success.  The new OS, appropriately called, WebOS, is html/css driven.  That means developing for it will be much easier than even… say the iPhone and its objective C.  However, how easily will it be to get apps for it.  Even blackberry has been trying to open up the development scene but so far with little success.  What I’d like to see is Palm keeping this thing open.  I think it’s smart to use common web technologies but take it one step further and don’t lock it down to only get apps through an “app store”.

Sprintel

Yes, they went with CDMA on this one, and Sprint!?!?  I didn’t hear anything about a GSM version but if anyone has, let me know!  Nevertheless, I’m pulling for Palm.  Let’s be honest, they need a break.  To me, they are the underdog of the PDA world, not afraid to take a risk even after past failures.  And for that… props!

GSM (Added several hours later)

It’s looking there actually may be a GSM model released but it’s doubtful that we’ll see it in the U.S., at least for a while.

Google Developing its Own Router?

January 8, 2009 by Curtis Leave a Comment

In Response to: Google rumored to be developing own router, also mowing own lawn, doing own laundry

Somewhere inside of Google there is a building, and inside that building there is an office the size of a small house, and inside that office there is a man… with power.  This man had an idea to optimize more daily internet traffic in a single day than any nerd can pull in his lifetime.  “Let’s develop our own router,” he said.  And much like when God said, “Let there be light,” there was a new router.

If the rumor is true, this won’t be the first time that Google has had its hand in hardware development, and certainly won’t be the last.  Apparently for the internet giant to even consider designing it’s own routers means that the merch they are getting from Juniper networks just isn’t cutting it.  And while Juniper’s stock may fall even at the speculation, hopefully GOOG will take a jump.  Either way, only time will tell if this is actually true or not.
